Puppy Parade
The only thing this art asks of you is to smile....
Hello Friends!
There is so much going on in the world right now. I feel like sharing puppies is more important than ever!
So I’d like to introduce you to some of the sweetest characters I’ve ever drawn...
From left to right we have Nelly, Storry, Autumn, little Doris, Grace and Harry. I know how you love to know their names, but the piece together is called The Puppy Parade - and the collection is called:
Drawing puppies…
Each of the puppies starts its little life in my studio as a sketch on paper. I then work into them with pencil crayon, a bit of watercolour and inky details to bring out the paws, whiskers and eyes.
You can never have too many whiskers (in my opinion!), so sometimes I can spend far too long adding them. But I feel they really help the creature, whatever type it may be, jump off the page. Even an elephant drawing can benefit from a whisker or two!
Breagh & Agnes
Like Mother, Like Daughter. This one grew out of thinking about Mother’s Day, and how irresistible the bond between a dog mum and her pup can be. Breagh is a real Scottish terrier who’s been to visit me in the studio - she is a thoughtful, expressive little lady with the most amazing eyebrows I’ve ever seen. Agnes is her imagined puppy companion, busy testing boundaries and causing small-scale chaos. It’s the glance between them that says everything…
Puppy Love
A little while ago I created a heart filled with dogs and it disappeared rather quickly, which always feels both surprising and lovely. Since then people have asked if I might ever make another…
This is a completely new version, drawn from scratch, and I found myself really enjoying every single face as it appeared on the page.
What I love most is the variety. Tiny noses, enormous paws, smooth coats next to curls. When they sit together like this you realise how extraordinary it is that they are all the same creature, and yet so wildly different.
Somehow we love them all without hesitation. My dachshund Otto is a complete nightmare. He runs in the opposite direction when I call him, pees inside if it’s raining, barks at cyclists and absolutely despises joggers. Yet I literally could not love him more.
All of these dogs have that potential for slight mischief. I think that’s what makes them so fun.
This piece is really a small celebration of that uncomplicated devotion, which very much works both ways. This print in particular has been very swiftly adopted by many, which feels very fitting for a heart full of dogs.
Puppy Parade
This print came together slowly, over many months of Daily Drawings and photos sent in by followers and friends. I’d been asking for pictures of your puppies, and people kindly sent them to me, many with ears too big for their heads and huge paws that looked as though they belonged to entirely different dogs!
Every puppy here belongs to someone who trusted me with their small, wriggly story. I drew them individually first, getting to know their expressions and character, and then I gradually brought them together as if arranging the most chaotic, cute and fun playdate imaginable!
Together they feel like a small celebration of that wonderful puppy stage where everything is new.
Print Adoption Details
These prints are limited edition and available to adopt from my website until tomorrow.
You can order them framed or unframed, and I’m delighted to say they can be shipped worldwide.
The release closes on Friday (TOMORROW - midnight UK time) and many of the prints are already finding homes, which is wonderful.
